So when is the right time to purchase your first wig? The hair loss journey presents us with so many challenges.

We may undergo a series of diagnostic tests, purchase several costly treatments &
products, only to end up frustrated, disappointed & a lot poorer!

On a day-to-day basis, we spend hours curling styling our hair only to see it lie lifelessly stuck to our ever more apparent scalps.

I BELIEVE THIS IS THE TIME TO BE BRAVE AND STEP INTO THE WORLD OF ALTERNATIVE HAIR

WELCOME TO YOUR FIRST WIG OR TOPPER.

So where does a new wig wearer go to purchase their first wig?

Online Versus in-Person Stores

You can google and find many online stores for the Canadian market that sell beautiful, quality
wigs. The problem is that shopping online for your first wig or topper is a highly ineffective
experience from a fit, style, colour, and cost point of view.

A new wig wearer first needs to know their head circumference. This is vital information
because poor fit can make or break the first wig-wearing experience.

Next is style. Stock photos put out by companies like Jon Renau, Raquel Welch, Rene of Paris,
etc. often misrepresent the actual style of the wig. What you see is not necessarily what you
will get. Then the bigger question is: How will the style actually look on you?

And then, even if you are ready to commit to a particular style, you need to choose the colour.

From a very personal experience, I can tell you that choosing a colour from the site’s colour
swatches is pretty hard to do. Blonds look like brunettes, grey can look like brown, and the ratio of highlights is impossible to figure out.

The pain of a bad online wig purchase!

In-Person Shopping for a wig is the only way!
(Fancy Nancy will greet you with open arms)

An experienced wig consultant with be able to help you with fit, style, and colour.

Your measurement must be taken first. The consultant will know which company lines will be the best fit for you. For example, Noriko’s wigs fit quite a bit smaller than Henry Margu’s or Tress Allure’s fit.

Then you will need to try on several different styles to decide what you like and what looks
best. This part is really fun. You get to see how you look in various styles & colours without having to dye or cut your hair!

  • Just a little footnote here. Density is the amount of hair fibre the wig has.
Most new wig wearers do not like too much density on their first wig as it is difficult to
go from having very fine hair to a full head of hair. I can assure you though that after
some time, the feeling that your head looks like it is exploding will pass.

Last but not least is colour. Many new wig wearers have a definite idea of what colour they want.
But today there is such a vast array of colours & highlights, done so professionally, that it is really difficult to choose. An experienced consultant will help to direct you to a colour that suits your complexion and overall look. Often your original idea of colour changes and you end up with a far different look.

Hope this helps you to take the first steps into the wonderful world of wig wearing.
